lesson 88 english

Are simple joys as valuable as complex experiences?

“Many people think that the most important life experiences are the complex and difficult ones, such as learning a new skill, finding a solution to a problem, or overcoming a great obstacle. These experiences, which can be unpleasant at times, are worthwhile because of what we learn from them. However, simple joys can be just as valuable. Uncomplicated activities, such as spending time with friends, savoring a meal, or appreciating the beauty of nature can bring us great happiness.”

Some other joys are doing what you want to be when you are an adult, or going on a vacation to a volcano, or waterfall.  Maybe to a camp, or on a camping trip with your friends.  These joys are simple to do but are fun.  Doing your hobbies is also fun.  I like flying, so last summer I was flying my RC plane.  Building can be fun.

Number one thing someone needs in life is a friend.  Having a friend is like learning a new skill, you and your friend may not always agree.

Are simple joys as valuable as complex experiences?  My answer is yes.

Can people have too much enthusiasm?

Can people have too much enthusiasm?

“When people are very enthusiastic always willing and eager to meet new challenges or give undivided support to ideas or projects they are likely to be rewarded. They often work harder and enjoy their work more than do those who are more restrained. But there are limits to how enthusiastic people should be. People should always question and doubt, since too much enthusiasm can prevent people from considering better ideas, goals, or courses of action.”

Yes some people can have too much enthusiasm.  When I get excited about something, I don’t think it over or through.  I like go karts, so this summer me and my brother are going to build two.  One for me and one for him.  We got excited and did not look at a place that sold a engine.  So, we are going to go to a store that will sell one.  Well back on track, we also did not look for the material for the go kart.

Yes people can get to much enthusiasm then others and that can lead to some problems that are in the paragraph above.

So can people have too much enthusiasm?  Yes people can, because when we do, we may not do things properly.

Is a perfect society possible or even desirable?

Is a perfect society possible or even desirable?

“Many people argue that it is impossible to create a perfect society because humanity itself is imperfect and any attempt to create such a society leads to the loss of individual freedom and identity. Therefore, they say, it is foolish to even dream about a perfect society. Others, however, disagree and believe not only that such a society is possible but also that humanity should strive to create it.”

No, I think you can not create a perfect society.  Here are the reasons why:  No human is perfect, no one will be perfect in this life, and this is just a learning part in our life and for the life to come.  Your parents may think you are perfect, but in reality, no one is.

So no one can make a perfect society, even if they are billionaires.  Not even the president can do it.  Social networks are not good, okay.  Kidnappers can use social networks to kidnap people and hold them for ransom.  I watched a video on social networks, and how kidnappers can kidnap kids who were, as young as 10 years old.  The guy just wanted to make a video on social networks.  He asked their parents if he could do this and they said “yes”.

All the children he did it to, came to the door or park or car.  One person got into his car.

Well, is a perfect society possible or even desirable?  My answer is no, there is no perfect society out in the world.

Indian wars in the west

The American Indian wars, were a bunch of wars that were fought from 1622-1924.  The two main tribes of indians were Apache, and Navajo.

The Mexicans killed everyone in site.  Geronimo, came back from hunting with friends, and found that his family was killed, his wife, three children, and his parents.  He went hunting for the killers, but didn’t find them.

After the Mexican American war, the Apache land went to the Americans, that is when gold was found.  Americans rushed to the gold, the apache would often ambush the Americans, killing many.  The U.S. army went after Geronimo, but could not catch him.  At one time, one third of the American army was after Geronimo.  Geronimo was in every single paper in the U.S.  He then was captured, but escaped four years later, and went on killing.

The army kept on chasing Geronimo until, Geronimo surrendered in 1886.  Geronimo’s group spent, 27 years in prison.  He lived only four more years.  He died while riding home on his horse, when his horse rear ended, and he fell.  He lived six days after that, dying at his nephew’s side.

The next tribe was Navajo.  The leader in this tribe was Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce.  Josephs father was the leader at the time and made peace with the Americans.  After gold was discovered it the land of the Navajos, Americans took back the land that they had promised the Navajo people.  To this Joseph the Elder took his bible and burned it.  He would not sign over the land to the Americans.  After Joseph the Elder’s death, Chief Joseph became leader.  The Americans started to attack the Navajo tribe.

Chief Joseph, lead the people up north, to Canada to escape the Americans.  This was also known as the greatest retreat in all history.  Instead of fighting, they fled.  But you are probably thinking that fleeing is for wimps, well fleeing from a war is brave.  They went over 1400 miles, and were just 40 miles from the border when they surrendered.  He gave one of the best speeches in American History:

“I am tired of fighting,” he said. “Our chiefs are killed. Looking Glass is dead. Toohoolhoolzote is dead. The old men are all dead. It is the young men who say, ‘Yes’ or ‘No.’ He who led the young men [Olikut] is dead. It is cold, and we have no blankets. The little children are freezing to death. My people, some of them, have run away to the hills, and have no blankets, no food. No one knows where they are perhaps freezing to death. I want to have time to look for my children, and see how many of them I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead. Hear me, my chiefs! I am tired. My heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever.”

Today the Navajo tribe has over 300,460 people and the Apache tribe has over 111,810 people.

Semester Report

This semester report will be on the lessons and essays I have done and what I have learned this year.  First will be reviews on essays this year and the lessons this year.  After that, it will be on the books that I have read so far and the books I’m going to read.

Lesson 70 was on writing my first research paper of the year.  This paper is on the Life Cycle of Butterflies.  It is a 657 word essay, go and check it out:

https://myhighflyblog.wordpress.com/2015/12/16/goliath-birdwing-butterfly/

My second research paper was on 19th century inventions, that was on lesson 75.  It is a 2062 word essay with two pictures, before and after, and a video, here is the link:

https://myhighflyblog.wordpress.com/2016/01/07/19th/

What I have learned this year is to write faster and to write better essays.  We would all agree that my essays are getting better every day, but they are probably not as good as yours.

There are three steps to write a good essay:  Good writing is easy to read and understand; follows conventional grammar standards; and is creative or entertaining to read.

A mind map is a piece of paper where you write your ideas onto then write the outline and then the essay.  A mind map has to have a subject, which is in the middle of the paper, then from the subject, you start to make arms that go to the main points.  From the main points you make arms to go to your sub points, and from that you make another arm that goes to your sub-sub points.  So you should have something like this:

https://www.google.com/search?q=mind+map+example&espv=2&biw=1920&bih=995&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi2j4ylsLnKAhUM6WMKHfSLBocQsAQIGw#imgrc=sQAbwAKHoksLDM%3A

Outlines are rough drafts.  You have the introduction, the body, and the conclusion.  You have sub points on the outline.  So you should have something like this:

https://www.google.com/search?q=outline+example&espv=2&biw=1920&bih=995&site=webhp&tbm=isch&imgil=j0Epo5oyEJYtRM%253A%253BE_uSQCB-ggMixM%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.law-schoolcoach.com%25252F1L-Law-Student%25252FLaw-School-Course-Outlines.htm&source=iu&pf=m&fir=j0Epo5oyEJYtRM%253A%252CE_uSQCB-ggMixM%252C_&ved=0ahUKEwikh6q2r7nKAhUY4GMKHZ1BCPgQyjcIKw&ei=-ACgVqSrCZjAjwOdg6HADw#imgrc=j0Epo5oyEJYtRM%3A

The books I’ve read from this 8th grade English class so far are called: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea; A Tale of Two Cities; Out on the pampas; The Scarlet Pimpernel; With Clive in India; and Pride and Prejudice.  I still have two more books to read for this year and they are called: Tale of The Western Plains; and The War of The World’s.

I didn’t like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea that much.  I don’t encourage you to read, but if you want to, then go ahead.

A Tale of Two Cities is about the french revolution.  If you don’t like books with gore in it, then don’t read this book.  The French revolution was a time in history, when the french nobles were getting all of the wealth, and the lower classes were getting nothing.  The people heard that the nobles were going to kill all of the lower classes, which made the people, kill almost all of the nobles.  Making the nobles to flee for their lives.  The king was decapitated by the guillotine.  Same with the queen.

Out on The Pampas, starts out with a family that wants to move to an acreage in the new world.  The new world at this time is the Americas.  The boys first had to learn how to build buildings and shoot rifles.  The girls had to learn how to cook.  Well, they moved, and started their farm there and became very successful.  But they were attacked by native Americans about five times.  If you what to know more, then read the book.

The Scarlet Pimpernel  was a book on the french revolution.  But, this one was trying to free the nobles before they were killed.  The English gentleman, with his gang of 20 or less, would go to France and get entire families out of the country at their own risk.  Every time was a success.  The guards of the gates in and out of the country, were told, if the Englishman gets passed you, then you will be killed by the guillotine.  Want to learn more, then read the book.

With Clive in India was when a boy goes to the army that is taking over India.  There are lots of battles and also an attack on their camp, which nearly killed him.  Want to learn more, then read the book.

Pride and Prejudice is about a Family that wants their daughters to marry men that had just move into the country.  3 miles was the distance from their house the Mr.Bingley’s house.  Jan is the daughter who her family wants to marry Mr.Bingley but does she?  Mr.Collins is there cousin who wanted to marry Elizabeth.  But do they get married?  Mr.Darcy gets married to who?  Just read the book to find out all of these answers or watch the 6 hour version of Pride and Prejudice. After reading the book, Ledia was fullish by marrying Mr.Wickham.

This semester report will end by reviewing the things I have talked about. The lessons and essays I’ve learned from this year.  After that, it will be on the books this year that I have read so far and the books I’m going to read.  I have even added in some links to essays on my wordpress, and I hope you would go and read them to.  I have even put some summaries of the books this year that I have read, and I also hope you read all the books for yourself, and watch the 6 hour move on Pride and Prejudice.

4 generals in the American Civil War

Ulysses S. Grant was the general of all the armies of the Union.  He was the only general to become the president of the U.S.A.  He served two terms.  Major General Ulysses S. Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio, in April 27, 1822.  His father was Jesse Root Grant, a tanner, who wanted Ulysses to take over the job his father had.

Grant’s real name was Hiram.  Hiram did not want to be a tanner, so he studied war tactics and things about war.  He served in two wars.  Me died July 23, 1885.

Robert E Lee was a Confederate general of the American civil war.  Born January 19, 1807.  Died October 12, 1870.

LESSON:50 English

Today’s essay is going to be on G.A.Henty.

G.A.Henty was born on 8th December, 1832 Trumpington, Cambridgeshire, England.  Henty was a sickly child growing up, staying in bed almost every day.  He then started to read books, and took a liking to them.  His first book was called A Search for a Secret.

He married Elizabeth in 1859, the couple had 4 children together before Elizabeth died from a long illness in 1865.  After her death, Henry started to write articles for the Standard newspaper.

Henry loved his children, so every night after dinner, he would tell them a story, of a battle, or a place such as the Americas.  Henty then wrote the book, Out on the Pampas in 1871, furthering his children’s names.

His first book he wrote was A Search for a Secret in 1867.  His last book was not finished, it was called By Conduct and Courage.  He died on 16th November, 1902 on his yacht in Weymouth Harbour, Dorset England at the age of 69.  He was buried in Brompton Cemetery, london.

All the books I have read that were written by Henty were The Dragon & The Raven, Out on the Pampas, With Clive in India, The Lion of the North, and Wulf the Saxon.

Summary of Wulf the saxon:

Wulf was a Saxon and Beorn was a Norman. Wulf meet Beorn when he was captured by the Normans. Wulf and Beorn are best friends same with Osgod. Beorn was wounded in a battle when the were attacked by Normans but they won and Beorn arm was amputated. They were really mad at the ambush that the Normans got scared and serenaded. Harold went to prince Willem and asked if they can get a ship to go back to England, but William made Harold take a oath that Harold was to be a servant to William for ever. Harold swore the oath and regretted it but he got a ship to go to England.

When they got to England Edward the king died and Harold became king. Willem sent a messenger to tell him the oath he took and Harold sent the messenger to tell William that he is king and that he can do anything he wants.

At this Willem got mad and the king up in the north was coming to fight Harold. The battle was long but Harold won. Weeks after Willem starts to envied and try to kill Harold. Harold was killed by an arrow that went in his eye, the his head was chopped off and a spear in his chest and one of his legs were cut off.

The essay above was written in grade 7.  It is not very good but you can get the picture on what happens in the book.

The Dragon & The Raven is when a war is on, and the Normans are killing the Saxons.  They killed all of the religious leaders on the olters and they destroyed towns and cities and villages.

G.A.Henty wrote 122 books, most of them are for kids.  The books I recommend you to read from G.A.Henty are The Dragon & The Raven, and Wulf the Saxon.

Lesson:39 English

Do we put too much emphasis on self-reliance and independence, and are we afraid of admitting that we need other people in our lives?

Independence is good for you, it teaches you to survive in hard times.  Being independent means that you have a farm, you make your own clothes, you hunt for food, and you can build.  What if a war happens and your city or town or village gets destroyed and you are the only person alive in a 100 mile radius.  What would you do?  This is why you need to be independent.  You would probably make a shelter, and search for food where the local shop was.  If you can survive for 1 month, then you can survive for a few years.

It is good to leave the nest and start a home on your own,  but to do this you need to find a job that can pay your bills, and bring food and clothes for you.  To get a job like this, you need to go to school to learn.  After that you are probably going to look for a better job, that will pay more than your last job did.  You might want to have your own company, this is more self reliant then working for someone.  You may even hire people to work for you.  Now you don’t have to do everything by yourself.
